File streaming vs file sync vs file transfer

18 October 2026, Marius-Florin Cristian

File sync keeps a full copy of every file on every device. File transfer sends one copy from one device to another. File streaming leaves the files where they are and opens them in place, so only the parts you read move.

Each one fits a different job. KEIBIDROP does transfer and streaming between your own devices, with no cloud in between.

Sync fits files you need everywhere

If you want the same documents on your laptop, your desktop and your phone, sync does that: each device keeps a full copy and works offline. The cost is disk space on every device, and a big folder takes a long time to land on a new one.

Transfer fits a finished file

Sending one finished file to someone is a transfer. With a cloud link it travels twice, up to the server and down to them. With KEIBIDROP it goes once, straight to their computer, and they can start on it while it arrives.

Streaming fits big folders you only need parts of

A video project, a photo archive, a NAS full of footage, a folder of logs: most of the time you need a few files, or a few minutes of one. Streaming opens them in place, and your disk keeps only what you opened. In a recorded test, searching a 19.9 GB folder moved 606 MB.

Private the whole way

Everything is encrypted from one device to the other, and the encryption is quantum-safe: it's built to hold up even against future quantum computers. On a direct connection the file never touches our servers. When a firewall, a hotel Wi-Fi or a mobile network blocks a direct connection, our relay passes along encrypted pieces it can't read.

Streaming needs the computer with the files to be on and connected. For offline access, press Save to keep a full copy, or use sync for those files.
