LocalSend, Warpinator and KDE Connect over the internet

LocalSend, Warpinator and KDE Connect send files between devices on one local network. From another network, the usual answer is to put both devices on a VPN first.

KEIBIDROP works on the same Wi-Fi with one click, and it also connects two devices on different networks, in different homes or countries, with no VPN and no port forwarding. Where the networks allow it the connection is direct, and where a firewall blocks it our relay passes along encrypted pieces it can't read.

These apps find each other on one network

LocalSend, Warpinator and KDE Connect find nearby devices with a broadcast on the local network. That's quick at home, and it's also why they stop when one device is on mobile data, at the office or in another country. A VPN puts both devices on one virtual network, so they find each other again, but both devices need the VPN running.

On the same Wi-Fi it takes one switch

Open KEIBIDROP on both computers and turn on the switch under Connect. After a few seconds the other computer appears under Nearby devices. Click Connect, then drag a file onto the window and the other person presses Save.

On different networks you swap codes once

  1. Install KEIBIDROP from the install page. It's free for Mac, Windows and Linux, and there's an Android app too.
  2. Open it, press Copy next to your code, and send the code to the other person on WhatsApp, Signal, email or any chat app.
  3. They install it too, paste your code and press Add. Then they press Copy and send you their code. You paste theirs and press Add.
  4. You both press Connect.
  5. Drag the file or folder onto the window: a video, a PDF, a spreadsheet, an archive, a game, anything. It pops up on their screen and they press Save.

Save the other computer as a contact, and next time you connect from the contact list. The phone has an Android app, and anyone with only a browser can join at web.keibidrop.com.

Private the whole way

Everything is encrypted from one device to the other, and the encryption is quantum-safe: it's built to hold up even against future quantum computers. On a direct connection the file never touches our servers. When a firewall, a hotel Wi-Fi or a mobile network blocks a direct connection, our relay passes along encrypted pieces it can't read.

KDE Connect also does notifications, the clipboard and remote input. KEIBIDROP covers the files part.

Connecting across networks goes through our relay for the pairing step, and the free relay allows a few connection attempts every few minutes. On one local network no relay is involved.
